Toshiba has launched the Vardia RD-A301 recorder in Japan.

As well as a 300GB hard disk, the new Vardia offers an interesting extra feature - the ability to record HD DVD content to DVDs.

Conforming to the HD Rec extension, you can record HD DVD content onto red-laser DVD-R/RW/RAM discs which will offer, as an example, about 2 hours on a 4.7GB disc.

It goes on sale in December for about 100,000 yen.
