OLPC "$100 laptop" hits $200

Price doubles for troubled scheme

Following the recent news of even more delays for the One Laptop Per Child product, in what must be becoming a PR disaster for the idealistic scheme, the price has now been hiked to double the original projected cost.

The "$100 laptop", designed as a learning aid for children in developing countries has seen delays, redesigns and price rises since its inception.

Only recently the foundation made an announcement that the product would cost $188, which was already an increase on the $150 quoted in February and April's $176 price tag.

Uruguay, Peru and Mongolia are the only three countries to have been confirmed to have placed orders for the machines - now quoted as costing $200 for orders of 10,000 or more.
