New Google doodle celebrates birthday of inventor Richard Trevithick
Two Google doodles in a row, what's going on? Too much of this and we'll forget what the normal Google logo looks like. We won't however, forget the birthday of Richard Trevithick, the Cornish inventor of the high pressure steam engine. No siree.
Yesterday's doodle was in honour of Yuri Gagarin's first human space flight, but the exploits and achievements of Trevithick were equally as important to our daily life, if not more so. He built the first full-scale working railway steam locomotive, as the doodle clearly signifies, and where would we have been without that in 1804? Still waiting on a platform near Merthyr Tydfil, that's where.
So let's salute Richard Trevithick, born on this day in 1771, without whom we'd never have got Super Saver evening and weekend deals. And we'd all have to have crammed onto long distance coaches... Just imagine the state of the on-board toilets. Shudder.
