A British company is hoping to offer skiers and snowboarders a way of tracking not only where they are, but how fast they going on the slopes this season with the launch of a new GPS device.

Called Satski, the "Satnav for the mountain" comes with a large square touchscreen display and will give users an interactive piste map, as well as allowing them to track their journey down the slope.

Like GPS for the car, users will be able to see where they are on the mountain, average ski speed, maximum speed achieved, distance, attitude, distance skied and alititude climbed/descended and more.

Users will also get a CD of their stats to put into Google Earth or Excel to show off to mates.

In addition to helping lost skiers, the unit will also come packed with information on the mountain, the resort and nearby bars to frequent.

However it won't be for the thrifty on a budget. Those looking to buy the unit that has a promised battery life of 4-6 hours will have to spend big; £1500 big.

Satski are hoping that customers looking to plan routes down the mountain and avoid the black runs will instead spend up to 40 euro a day hiring one when they next take to the slopes next year.

The unit will also have an MP3 player, and come with Connect 4 to play when you're bored on the ski lift.

Although with the unit being neither shock or waterproof we would suggest you take out any insurance the rental company offers.

  • Check out Snocator on the iPhone, for iPhone ski maps. It uses the GPS in your iPhone to show you exactly where you are on the mountain. Snocator combines trail maps for iPhone, but also has snow reports for iPhone as well as web cams, weather forecasts, and more.

It's in the app store now, and they have map coverage for all popular ski resorts in North America, and weather and snow reports for resorts worldwide.

  • I regret buying this GPS satski. reason: device LCD defect after 4 days, while 4 days in snow to go. GPS signal got lost most of the time. customer service was not helpful at all. went to lots of trouble.. My opinion price too high, quality probably Chinese and very very cheap bad quality. DO NOT BUY waiste of money. Posted by leroy, autria
  • This device is not so excellent as it looks. as a matter of fact I am quite unsatisfied after purchasing a device unit of this so called Satski GPS. First of all the price is acceptable. But the quality is rather cheaply produced. One of the buttons went defect during my 2nd day at Le Menuire ski piste. Terrible! Also satellite receipt at the piste : very unreliable. frequently no receipt at all.. how is this possible and how can I make a full ski summary? the device is unreliable. To me this device looks like cheap Eastern manufactured. Althougt at first glimp the device looks awesome. But after using for 1 week I can advise everybody not to purchase this gadget. • Regret to have bought this device. Looked pretty cool just out of the box. But a little bit of snow fell on my device and it sustained water damage. water went behind my display. and couldn't use it the next day. not suitable for usage in snow apparantly. maybe better for in car usage? • I went skiing in the season twice. brought the white satski gps device with me. but quite a lot of disappontments. I would say, leave navigation to in car use. not for piste use. I even could not read the display. and the receipt of gps signal was very weak and bad. So my route recording was not reliable to make reports afterwards.

  • Hello, I am waiting for a replacement unit for faulty unit since 3 months. Still haven't received anything. Some people are experiencing the same I read on a Ski forum thread. Just Google these 3 words 'SNOWHEADS+FORUM+SATSKI' and find out for yourself. Unlike product quality a Companies unreliability is not subject for improvement. This company is totally NOT reliable. Nor is it's CEO (JCB) I experienced. He was very rude to me AND to others! If you want to purchase a Satski GPS think about it twice I would suggest! Posted by Alan, UK
  • I have read a lot of discussions about hardware reliablity and problems regarding Satski GPS. I personally have no experience with this product. However to all who are considering to purchase a Satski (like me), I would suggest to read the below forum: http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=48595.
How safe is Satski for advance payment credit card transactions and (longer term) service issues? Satski ltd. was dissolved from Companies House Register this year. I think this last fact and the discussion on snowheads forum say important things to make the right decission. The 'behaviour' of their CEO is also described in several forums. Check the WHOLE story out I would advise.

  • hi, their CEO was really rude and unprofessional to me. I asked him some (apparantly to him) 'annoying' questions and he told me to 'get a life'. I don't think that is very normal. this is my personal opinion. Posted by Marck, ENG
