Happy 7th Birthday Facebook
Facebook is 7 years old today - according to the official info page it was founded on 4 February 2004 with the aim of "giving people the power to share and make the world more open and connected".
The world's biggest social network was created by Mark Zuckerberg, along with his college buddies Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.
At first, Facebook was originally intended to be a network just for students at Harvard, but it eventually spread amongst other elite universities, normal universities, re-branded polytechnics and so on until it reached the common pleb, of which it's now over-run with.
It's said that Mark Zuckerberg may have pinched the idea off of three Harvard seniors, Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra and that once he made it big time, he and Justin Timberlake left Eduardo Saverin out in the cold. Or something like that. Someone should really make a film about it to clarify things. Oh, hang on.....
In its 7 years Facebook has seen some ups and downs. The downs seem to revolve around its constant need to reassure people about security and the ups, well the ups are just the huge amount of people signing up to the service every day and the company's monetary worth. 500 million and $50 billion respectively at the last count.
Facebook actually provides a neat little timeline on its page of the company history (very subjective, of course), so be sure to check that out.
Will Facebook still be around in another 7 years. Who knows? It wouldn't surprise us to see the social network take over the world and for the Zuck to install himself as chief overlord of the universe. Then again, we wouldn't be shocked if Facebook imploded as a result of the enormous amount of menial updates being uploaded to its servers on a daily basis.
Whatever happens, it's congrats on 7 years Mark and the gang, many happy returns.
