So we’ve been banging on about the white stuff all this week, but what do we really know about it? Yes, it’s cold. Yes, it’s unpredictable. And yes, it tends to bring the UK to a complete standstill.
It’s magical mysterious stuff, and there’s no denying that a light dusting makes just about anywhere on the planet look better. Apart from maybe Slough.
But finding out what makes the perfect snowflake, drift or storm is a very real and very specialist science.
This site, nsidc.org, is the home page of the National Snow and Ice Data Centre, and there’s not much they don’t know about cold things.
They spend all their time studying snow and ice, in some of the most remote and beautiful places on Earth, and they've documented their findings in extraordinary detail here.
If you want to know more about the cryosphere of our little planet, you’re in the right place here.
