Double resolution suggested in latest iPad 2 rumours

iPad 2 rumours, don't you just love them? Whaddya mean no? Of course you do. You love being drip-fed tit-bits of information that may or may not be true - even if you can't admit it to yourself.

Although, all sarcasm aside, the latest developments with regards to the next-gen iPad are quite juicy and, more importantly than that, are realistic.

The first of which is regarding the display. Mac Rumours has stumbled across some icons for iBooks versions 1.1 and 1.2, that have a graphic tantalisingly labelled as iPadx2 which quadruples the pixel count from the iPad labelled icon.

Now, although a doubled display from the original iPad would come in at 2048 x 1536 and wouldn't quite be a Retina display, it would sure look purty at 260dpi.

But in order to display this higher resolution Apple would need a better GPU, right? Step forward the new version of the company's custom A4 chip (reportedly the SGX543MP2, which pairs two SGX543 cores to offer around four times the capabilities) - as suggested by Apple Insider. Its report also hints at a multiple core ARM Cortex-A9 for general purpose processing.

But with all these extra video capabilities, and the iPad's limited SSD options, surely you're going to fill it up too soon with HD action. And that's where the new SD slot, as reported by Engadget, comes in - although there will be no traditional USB slot (boo).

This report also mentions the much expected front and rear cameras for the tablet sequel, but also speculates that Apple's new baby "will feature a dual GSM/CDMA chipset produced by Qualcomm and will mark Apple's shift away from Infineon as its chipset maker to Qualcomm for all of its mobile devices". Ooh-er.

An April launch is suggested, which would be a year since the original launched. The original was announced at an Apple event in January 2010 though, so there's hope we could hear something official by February at the latest.

But who wants official confirmation, the rumour mill is much more fun, right?
