gPhones start shipping - for research and development

50,000 HTC handsets leave Taiwan

CNN is reporting that Google phone has begun shipping. But, before we all get too excited, it appears that the handsets are for further development only.

"These initial phones are not going to be for sale", Benjamin Schachter, a UBS analyst said. "These are going to be available for developers only to understand how the software works."

Taiwanese handset manufacturer HTC will apparently ship about 50,000 phones running on a mobile operating system made by Google by the end of this year.

It's not the first time that HTC has been linked as the manufacturer for the Google phone, but the analyst also believes that LG, who Google has worked closely with on phones before, could also make the hardware.
