iOS 4.2 "soon" according to Apple

Just to tease all of the Apple fanboys waiting on tenterhooks for iOS 4.2 - especially iPad owners who will have the most to gain - an email has been sent to all developers promising that the new operating system will, "soon be in the hands of millions of customers around the world".

It's also a rallying cry to ensure that there are plenty of compatible apps available from day one, something that plagued the launch of iOS 4.0 when multitasking-enabled apps took a considerable while to hit iTunes. Indeed, some 4.2 applications have already started to hit the App Store.

The email also seems iPad-centric, with Multitasking and Game Center being highlighted - both of which are, of course, already available on iPhone and iPod touch. But, the third major feature Apple is hawking this time around affects everyone: AirPrint. It, according to the email, "allows you to easily enable instant wireless printing from your iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch apps". And boy, have users of the company's devices been crying out for that one.

Naturally, in Apple tradition, there's still no announced date for the iOS 4.2 update, but the smart money suggests that you should be clicking away in iTunes around 6pm tonight.

Either way, we'll be sure to let you know when it goes live.
