Microsoft launches video download service

Microsoft has entered the video downloading market with a service similar to Apple's iTunes offering, but with videos.

The new service geared towards its Portable Media Center operating system will allow subscribers to get daily TV programmes, news, sport and eventually movies.

Microsoft hopes that the millions of users using the PocketPC, Portable Media Centre or SmartPhone operating system will take up the idea and start watching videos on the go.

Unfortunately the service is currently only available in the US at the moment and will cost $19.95 per year.

Over 20 third party media sources have signed up for the service including MSNBC, Fox Sports, IFilm, MTV, Tivo, Napster and the DIY Network.

Content would be downloaded to a PC first and then transferred to a portable media centre device (like these) to watch when on the train or out and about.

Sony has also announced similar plans for its handheld console, hoping that over 400 films from the Sony Catalogue will be available for downloading by next year when the service launched.
