At a press event in Amsterdam, Motorola has made a surprise announcement and unveiled four new handsets that are to hit shops in 2008.

The company will release a "breakthrough" mobile phone equipped with an 8-megapixel camera, under the name of Motorola Skarven.

The Skarven will have a 2.8-inch, 640 x 480 resolution, 16 million colour display and what's being reported as a "banana slider" form factor. It will also boast Wi-Fi connectivity and GPS.

Not a lot is known about another handset, the Motorola X PIXL one, other than that it will have a 5-megapixel camera.

The Motorola E10 Texel will be a music phone with a touch-sensitive surface with "shifting" numbers and letters, described as along the same lines as the Motorola ROKR E8.

The Motorola Genghis will be an entry-level smartphone with a full QWERTY keypad, but described as with "average performance".

As you can tell from the brevity of this report, specs, and pics are thin on the ground, but we'll find out more and update the story as soon as we can.
