Virgin Media is the latest provider to carry the Nokia N8 smartphone, and as an incentive to sign up with it specifically, the company is pre-loading its Virgin Media Player application, allowing access to a host of TV and video on demand.
The Player is a portal to on-demand content from 4oD, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickleodeon, therefore offering episodes of shows, including The Inbetweeners, South Park, The IT Crowd and Dora the Explorer (oh, yes!). It's the same content that's available on the main VM Player accessible online.
The mobile version does differ in cost though. While the online version is free to use (for an hour a day) to all XL TV and broadband customers, the mobile edition is on a pay as you go basis:
"There is no subscription fee for the VM Player as this operates on a pay-as-you-use service", a Virgin Media spokesperson told Pocket-lint. "The cost will appear on the monthly bill for pay-monthly users or be deducted from the customers’ credit if they are pay-as-you-go".
Thankfully, though, watching shows on the Player doesn't affect the user's data usage limits:
"Virgin Media customers’ data usage will not be affected and they won’t incur any additional costs. However, Virgin Media would advise non Virgin Media customers to check with their service provider data charges to avoid any unexpected costs".
The Nokia N8 is available from free on a 24-month £40 Virgin Media pay monthly tariff with 1200 inclusive minutes, unlimited texts, unlimited web access and free calls to other Virgin Mobiles. It can be ordered online from virginmobile.com.
