Netflix goes disc-free on PS3

Over here in England's green and pleasant land (and Scotland's, Wales' and Northern Ireland's too, of course) we've been cheered greatly by the news that Lovefilm will be hurtling the way of our PS3s via our broadband connections.

And just as we thought that we were on a par with our US cousins, we get trumped as the news breaks that, not only is Netflix streaming going disc free Stateside, it will be bringing with it 1080i HD streaming and 5.1 channel surround sound with it as well.

Starting 18 October, the US PS3 Netflix offering will no longer require you to have the Netflix disc in place, and instead will be accessible via your XMB bar.

You'll need to sign-in with your PlayStation Network login and, once you've done that, you'll find a service that offers the Dolby Digital Plus 5.1-channel surround sound, as mentioned, as well as a new user interface, "including the recently added search functionality, will deliver a much richer and faster browsing experience".

"With a new look and feel plus additional features such as 5.1 surround sound, Netflix on the PlayStation 3 delivers an amazing viewing experience for enjoying movies and TV shows streamed from the Internet to your living room", said Greg Peters, Netflix vice president, product development.

"We expect PS3 owners who have been instantly watching movies and TV shows streamed from Netflix will be pleased with the continued enhancements that we’re offering".
