APP OF THE DAY: BT FON (iPhone)

The old Twain quote says: "The only two certainties in life are death and taxes".

If the American author was still alive today, he'd no doubt consider his original statement and modify it to include a third - that Pocket-lint will bring you an App of The Day, every working weekday, at 6pm.

We're so efficient, that you could set your watch by us. And today's featured application is....

The BT FON isn't the greatest app in the world. Sure, it's useful but it's hardly ground-breaking.

We know what you're thinking - "why the bloomin' heck are you including it in your illustrious App of The Day feature then?"

Well, if you give us a minute then we'll get to that.

The BT FON app is free, but for every app that is downloaded from iTunes or the Android Market Place, BT will give 50p to Children in Need - up to a maximum of £10,000. So we need to get this app downloaded 20,000 times so BT coughs up the full amount.

But we don't expect you to simply download an app just for the sake of it (even though you could, in theory, just delete it straight away).

We know that an app needs to serve a purpose as well. And the BT FON one does, sort of.

As well as a handy Wi-Fi map of BT Openzone and BT FON zones, the app will also auto-sign you in to these networks when they are available, once you've entered your BT broadband credentials.

John Petter, managing director, for BT Retail Consumer, said: "Millions of BT Total Broadband customers already get free access to the UK’s biggest Wi-Fi network. This free app makes accessing Wi-Fi so simple you don’t even have to think about it.

"This represents real value to our customers at a time when more and more people are using their mobile phone to access the internet. By downloading it now customers can also help BBC Children in Need".

There, we think even the BT boss knows the real attraction of this app.

Download it now and help BT raise £10,000 for Children in Need.
