Infographic: The most popular websites - can you spot your favourite?
For an infographic to really grab our attention it has to tick two boxes.
Firstly, it has to be visually alluring and secondly it has to be intriguing. If it fails on one of these two counts then it's really just a glorified graph.
Luckily for the guys over at Nmap, its "Icons of the Web" infographic did tick the two boxes.
Its effort shows off the most popular 288,945 sites on the web (from the Alexa rankings) by using their icons (from a HTML tag, or the favicon if that was missing), and displaying them in a net-chart style arrangement with the icon size being dependent on the website's popularity.
What you get is a colourful mishmash, that wouldn't look out of place in the Tate Modern:
If you head on over to the Nmap site, you can even interact with the infographic by zooming in and trying to find your favourite site's icon.
Simple, but very effective. As all good infographics should be.
