Google says no-one ever feels lucky...

In an interview with the Washington Post, Marissa Mayer, vice president for search products and user experience at Google has admitted that no-one uses the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button on the search engine's homepage, which sees less than 1% use.

Despite this admission, and the fact that the space on Google's famously spare page could be usefully employed for something else, there are no plans to remove it: "If we took it away, there would be mass protests worldwide. It's part of our heritage. It's part of what users really like about us".

The Washington Post reports that in user studies "Google loyalists" state that the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button offers a "touch of whimsy" and suggests that the company doesn't take itself too seriously even after becoming a multi-billion dollar business.
