Philips adopts edge-lit LED tech for new TV range

The majority of television manufacturers have now switched to edge-mounted LED backlighting, favouring a slim footprint over a rear-lit system, and now Philips has followed suit with its 7605 series of TV.

Available in 32-, 37-, 40- and 42-inch screen sizes, the sets are all Full HD, and feature the company's proprietary Pixel Precise processing, HD Natural Motion, 100Hz technology, and NetTV.

Additionally, they come with a slightly adapted version of Ambilight Spectra 2 (stereo-shooting) that can now, for the first time, be tuned to suit the wall behind the telly. Not everybody will be placing it in front of, or mounting it on, a white wall, so there are now simple to use on-screen settings to help the owner tweak the screen's ambient lighting mode to match specific surroundings.

Philips claims that the edge-lit LED backlighting helps the sets achieve a contrast ratio of 500,000:1 (dynamically), and a brushed aluminium bezel on the face makes for a welcome alternative to the industry standard gloss black finishes.

Pricing for the 7605 series sets puts them firmly in the mid-range category: The 32PFL7605H comes in at £849; the 37in version, £999; the 40incher, £1199; and the 46in daddy, £1499.

All TVs are available in stores now.
