After a gruelling Facebook campaign the votes are finally in and it looks as though Brian Blessed will become a new voice for TomTom's satnavs.
He will join recent additions of Darth Vader and Yoda, however rather than anything more Shakespearean it looks as though the bearded bombshell from Barnsley* will be covering routines from the sc-fi hit movie Flash Gordon - possibly.
*Brian Blessed is actually from Mexborough, however Barnsley's pretty close and had the advantage of beginning with B.
The story goes that motorist Richard Gardner was desperate for a bit of Blessed action on his satnav, and so started up a Facebook group to call for the actor's voice to be included on his GPS deveice.
To cut a long story short TomTom said that if he could get 25,000 supporters for his group they'd open negotiations, and the rest is history.
Damian Woodward, TomTom UK VP sales and marketing said: "Voices are becoming an ever more popular personalisation tool for our sat navs and it's been an interesting journey watching this particular campaign take shape. It shows the power of social media, and if we can bring shouty happiness to over 25,000 people who are we to deny it?"
This is another example (we had Cadbury's Wispa a while back) of the way companies are looking at social networks more in order to shape their product lines.
