Rage - quick play preview

First announced in 2007, Rage from id, has been a long time coming, and hopefully will soon be with us. So can the creators of Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein get it right yet another time around? We got hands on behind the closed doors of E3 to find out.

Name

Rage

What platform is it on?

Xbox, PS3, PC, and possibly Mac

When's it due out?

2011

What other game is it like?

Bulletstorm, Halo but without the sci-fi stuff

Does it use any new tech like 3D, PlayStation Move, or Kinect for Xbox 360?

No

The pitch

Built on id Software’s newest game engine, id Tech5, RAGE is an all-new take on the first person shooter.

The storyline

Set in the future, although not too distance, after an asteroid impacts Earth, leaving a ravaged world behind. You emerge into this vast wasteland to discover humanity working to rebuild itself against such forces as raider gangs, mutants, and the Authority - an oppressive government regime that has a special interest in you in particular.

Our first impressions

id’s Rage, shown behind closed doors, sets a new benchmark for dazzling post- apocalyptic scenery, and id seems to have put serious thought into making its mixture of adventure, exploration and ultra-violent, mutant-slaying gunplay really compelling. The final result may prove otherwise, but if you’d written id off as has-beens, it might be time to think again.

Please note

The E3 games convention is a fantastic chance to see the latest games due out over the coming year, as well as, letting us get a glimpse into what is going to be the big titles and the ones to avoid like the plague.

The big problem however is that for most of the titles that glimpse is, well, just that. At the show you'll get to play a level here or a multiplayer map there.

So with that in mind we present you with our Quick Play.

What we've done is broken down the key facts you need to know and then given you our first impressions based on around 15 minutes of gaming. For us that 15 minutes isn't enough to do a First Look review. How can you rate a game that offers over 30 hours of gaming on just 15 minutes of play? However it should hopefully give you an idea, a feeling, a notion, of what to expect come launch day.
