The iPad 2 rumours started back in February, but the second round has already begun. The latest rumour comes from Digitimes, from the wonderfully named Max Wang, who claims that sources in the component industry are telling him that the next iPad will have an OLED display.
OLED displays are comprised of organic light-emitting diodes, and feature greater brightness, contrast ratios, and lower power consumption than their regular LCD brethren. However, they are rather more expensive than a regular display. The hope is that the price will drop in the future as production ramps up and economies of scale can be brought in.
As Digitimes notes, a 9.7-inch LCD panel right now costs around $60-$70, but the price of a 9.7-inch OLED display is more like $500. Still, it wouldn't be unlike Apple to offer it as a high-end option for customers whose money pile is a little larger than their pile of sense. More iPad 2 rumours as we get them.
