TomTom takes on AA and RAC with new breakdown service

TomTom is a name that you'll know from the world of GPS and satnavs, but now it could be rescuing you from the side of the road when you break down as well, as it's launched a new breakdown service in the UK and Europe.

Those in the know will know that TomTom Assist has actually been available since last year to a select few, however following what TomTom tells Pocket-lint was "a massive take-up of the service" (over 22,000 people), it's decided to open up the service to anyone who wants it.

UK membership, which is backed by Mondial Assistance, starts at £27 and will give you access to a "nationwide network of trained, industry accredited technicians, as well as access to over 2500 recovery vehicles, it offers great value cover and benefits exclusive to TomTom customers".
  
TomTom Assist members have three different types of membership to choose from: TomTom Assist, TomTom Assist Plus and TomTom Assist Plus Europe. 

TomTom Assist includes:

Roadside assistance: If the car stops and it’s not supposed to TomTom Assist will send an expert to repair it. If it can’t be repaired in 30 minutes TomTom Assist will get the vehicle to the nearest suitable garage for repair.

Vehicle recovery: If the car is broken or immobilised it will be taken to the nearest suitable garage if it can’t be fixed.

Glass replacement: If the windscreen is broken or smashed TomTom Assist will provide details of someone who can help.

Message relay service: TomTom Assist will pass on urgent messages to family, business or friends.

TomTom Assist Plus in addition to TomTom Assist includes:

Home assistance: Home start of a car.  If it can’t be fixed within 30 minutes TomTom Assist will get it into the nearest or most appropriate repairer.

Nationwide vehicle recovery: If the vehicle breaks down or is immobilised anywhere in the UK, if it can’t be fixed, TomTom Assist will get the car to the nearest or most appropriate garage for repair.

Onward travel: If the vehicle breaks down (or is immobilised) in the UK and it’s stuck for over 4 hours, TomTom Assist will pay for a train, cab or plane back home or to the final destination.

Hotel accommodation: If the car breaks down and it's over 50 miles from home TomTom Assist will arrange a hotel for the driver and up to seven passengers - if the stay has been prolonged.


TomTom Assist Plus Europe in addition to TomTom Assist Plus includes:

European benefits assistance and recovery: TomTom Assist gives its members assistance and peace of mind, from home and across 34 EU member states.

Onward travel: If the vehicle can’t be repaired TomTom Assist will organise and pay for rail transport (or equivalent costs of more convenient travel) to get the member and up to seven passengers home in the UK or on to the original destination within continental Europe.

Vehicle repatriation: If the car can’t be repaired within 8 hours, TomTom Assist can arrange for the car to be taken to the nearest repair garage to the member’s home in the UK.

Hotel accommodation: If the vehicle is immobilised for longer than 8 hours, TomTom Assist will organise and pay for hotel bed and breakfast accommodation for up to a maximum of 5 nights.

Temporary replacement vehicle: If the car is immobilised for a period of more than 8 hours, TomTom Assist will pay for the cost of a temporary replacement vehicle, for as long as it’s immobilised, up to 7 days.

UK car hire: In the UK (if the vehicle is recovered and TomTom Assist still can’t fix it) a rental car will be provided after only 4 hours.
