The dust has settled on Alistair Darling’s budget and apart from motorists, smokers and (bizarrely) cider drinkers, who have had their taxes spanked, the rest of us have been left wondering where we stand. Are we worse off? Will the stamp duty changes actually help anybody?
Who knows? But, one tax that we wholeheartedly support is this idea. It’s a proposition to tax bank-to-bank transactions and give the money to fight poverty. Literally a Robin Hood tax.
It‘s gaining momentum, thanks to celebrities lending their faces to the campaign, so if Darling’s paying attention, this might become a reality very soon.
