Sony Ericsson orders Windows Mobile handsets from HTC

Report suggest million-plus order for smartphones

DigiTimes is reporting that Taiwan-based OEM manufacturer HTC has landed a big order from Sony Ericsson.

The reports, originating from the Chinese-language Commercial Times, suggest Sony Ericsson has placed the large "ODM" order for Windows Mobile-based smartphones.

ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) orders are differentiated from the OEM supply chain as the original manufacturer is not acknowledged as creating the product.

This smartphone order, said to be over one million units, would be a massive change in direction for Sony Ericsson who has never offered a Windows-based mobile.

The HTC/Sony Ericsson smartphones are due to be marketed in the second half of 2008, so unless any statements are forthcoming from either company (unlikely) we'll have to wait and see.
