Yanko Design is showcasing a wind-up power socket, which allows users to set devices to turn off after a period of time. That could be useful for setting your phone charger to consume less power, or for tightly enforcing TV time for youngsters.
It's easy to use - when you plug a device in, just rotate it to the desired amount of time. It uses clockwork, like an egg timer, to work out when to switch off. The creators, Dongwon Joo & Jieun Choi, make the point that most devices are only used for an hour at most before they're switched off. Many, however, remain in standby mode - sucking power.
It's not commercially available, but hopefully it'll be snapped up by a manufacturer in the same way that the 1cm-thick UK plug was. If it does make it to production, we'll let you know.
