Motorola has announced, on its Facebook fan page of all places, that the Android 2.1 update will be rolling out to its Droid handset this week. It also says that it'll be making further announcements later in the week on upgrades to other handsets.
The company posted: "Hi all-- we know you are frustrated with the lack of details regarding Android software upgrades and we sincerely apologize for not being able to share info sooner. We're happy to relay the 2.1 upgrade to DROID will start to roll out this week, and we will have more information to share on other device upgrades later this week as well".
Meanwhile, over in Europe the 2.0.1 update is only just arriving for the Motorola Milestone - which is the same handset. Motorola Europe's Facebook page is full of upset customers, complaining about the update not being rolled out simultaneously to everyone. One user described the situation as "beyond ridiculous".
Update: It appears this may have been a bit premature. The manager of the company's forums has removed the post about the update, saying: "How embarassing. Apparently we jumped the gun on these details....". The update page on Motorola's website has gone too. What's going on?
