It's being suggested that Facebook is planning to take on the likes of Google, Yahoo and Microsoft in launching a webmail service to replace its increasingly-dilapidated messaging interface.
According to sources quoted by TechCrunch, the social network, which has just updated its homepage, is planning a fully-featured email product that'll offer full POP/IMAP support and an address that matches your Facebook vanity URL - if you have one. Facebook's existing messaging interface already has threaded messages support, like Gmail.
This could be one of the "cool" things that Zuckerberg has promised to deliver monthly over the near future. It could also elevate the social network even further above its competitors and provide an alternative for those who've been stung by the latest Hotmail hacks.
We'll keep you posted of further details about this rumour, as we hear them. Until then, however, what would make you switch from your current email provider to Facebook? Let us know what you think in the comments.
