Nokia's research bods have revealed a "Mobile Radar" concept that shows how one day you could measure an object's distance, speed, and direction using a mobile device.

"It's essentially the same technology the police use in their radars", says Nokia, with the obvious potential as a sports application to judge the speed of a runner, cyclist or similar.

What's more interesting to the average consumer is the gesture control possibilities the tech offers - demoed in the video above.  

The radar could see you raise or lower your hand to adjust the phone's volume, without ever touching the hardware, and it somehow works even when the phone is covered by an object.

However, Nokia says "don't get your hopes up that you'll see this in a Nokia handset very soon, it's still just a prototype".
