RAC builds traffic app for Android & iPhone

The RAC has released a mobile application that allows downloaders to avoid traffic jams. The app, which is available in the iPhone App Store and on the Android App Market, overlays traffic data onto a Google Map and displays it with the latest warning information.

The app accesses your device's GPS to grab your location, which it then centres the map around, only displaying traffic difficulties in your vicinity. It can read out traffic warnings too, with a text-to-speech engine that you'll need to install separately, and gets its traffic info from Trafficlink, a provider of real-time traffic data.

RAC's director of sales and marketing, Saj Arshad, told Pocket-lint: "RAC's first app is a natural companion for motorists who frequently feel thwarted by the growing problem of congestion on the UK's roads. Given the popularity of our Route Planner online, we know motorists trust RAC when it comes to all things motoring. We're delighted to build on this legacy with a free app to help motorists plan their journeys using live traffic information".

It's available now.
