"Sounding a horn has negative connotations. If cars could smile, a new method of driving could evolve", claims Nissan in the video above. The car company has teamed up with the Hara Design Institute Nippon Design Center to build a car that can grin.

Using animatronics and a polyurethane elastomer fibre, a driver can make his or her car flash a cheeky smile at other vehicles on the road. The Fibre, which is called ROICA, can stretch by 500% to 900%, and "shows outstanding recovery" from that stretching.

So soon when you're stuck in traffic, you'll be able to beam happily at other vehicles. Beats giving them the finger, we suppose.
