  • Hey.. babe.. is that a WiFi hotspot in my pocket or do I fancy you? Posted by philbridges, United Kingdom
  • This is great, I may hold off getting an Ipod touch until this comes out so I can use skype and email anywhere I get 3g. I am on an excellent deal with 3 - £15 for 15gig and with a skype account for calls it gives me all but a few Iphone features for alot less money and no contract. Just slip this into your bag and your a walking hifi spot.

Downsides? Battery life will be appalling but it can stay plugged in at home and like you said when your static plug it in via a USB to both charge and use. It will also cost a bit more than £19.99 (RRP of the ZTE USB modem you get with all contracts now - actually a very usable device, not in the same mould as the 1st gen stuff they brought out. Dongles that dangled, those where the days) but I can see so many benifits to this device I will find the money.

I hope it is available to existing cutomers (although I am not waiting until upgrade time, I am on a 2 year deal)

Time will tell on this one me thinks

  • An obvious evolutionary step from the Huawei D100 WiFi/3g Router - which combined with the Huawei E156 modem on 3's 15gig tarrif, is small enough to fit into the laptop bag and hence I've been using it for out-office ad-hoc small team working.

This product (the Huawei E583X) however resolves a gripe with the D100, namely the lack of battery and being even smaller makes it even more portable.

Interestingly, the D100 is now only available from 3 Stores. However, suspect the pricing of this at £68.51 (full price)/£34.25 with SIM et al, gives an indication of the likely pricing of the E583X.

Personally, at this price point, I would still go for the D100 for home and temporary office use.

Note: For secure WiFi connection, configure the use of WPA2-PSK and AES.
