  • So the Vodafone Pocket-lint Gadget Awards awarded the Blackberry Storm (only available on Vodafone) as 'Best Mobile Phone'. Which isn't even available yet. Right.

You see, when awards are fixed, the fixer would usually try and conceal their hand. Others the whole shebang is open to accusation and doubt.

Hey Mr Pocket-Lint, anything else you'd like to tell your readers about as to the winners of the other awards?

  • Thanks for your comments Fact Finder. However I feel I need to correct you on a number of misguided facts in your comment above.

The nominations are chosen by the Pocket-lint team based on our experience with the hundreds of products we've tested over the last year. The winners are chosen by a panel of 10 independent judges, made up from the gadget press, here in the UK.

This year Pocket-lint had two votes to cast in each category, so the notion that we could somehow fix that award to make any handset win is silly. If we wanted to fix the awards (as you claim) it would be a closed voting procedure without the help of outside judges.

On the question of the fact that it's not publically available, many of the judges had already seen and tested the handset due to the nature of their positions within the media. Following a further discussion on the judging evening all the judges felt it was fair for the handset to be included in the nominations and clearly by their voting deemed the Storm the winner.

We've been running the Pocket-lint awards for 5 years and pride ourselves on being the fairest and most open tech awards in the business. We do not open any of the votes to a public vote, or merely choose winners here within the team, but instead rely on the experience of other journalists in the field, many of which most would deem our competition.

The mere fact that I am replying openly rather than just deleting your comment for no-one to see should hopefully prove that the sponsorship of the awards and the win by the BlackBerry Storm for Best mobile phone have no connection whatsoever.

    Hopefully I've answered your questions.

  • Stuart, thanks for your response. As you say, I thought it may have been deleted, so am glad to pop back here and see that it wasn't. I hope you can see though that this award can appear to be *potentially* suspect to your readership. Posted by FactFinder, UK
