Facebook frenzy leads to birthday party invasion

A 16 year old who advertised her birthday party on Facebook had to call the police as 300 teenagers descended upon her home.

The teen invited one hundred of her friends to the party in her house in Brighton using the social networking website.

But the word got out.

Even though there were adults at the party, Sussex police had to be called to disperse the would-be revellers.

Inspector Andy Richardson told BBC News: "There was a sea of people, the place was overrun".

"We eventually got the unwanted guests out at around 11pm", he added.

But not before the family home was trashed with damaged carpets and a wrecked shed and garden.

The police are now advising against organising parties using Facebook.

RIM cuts Q3 profit and revenue outlook

Canadian manufacturer RIM, the brains behind the BlackBerry device, has been hit by the economic slowdown.

In a surprise move, RIM has cut its third-quarter profit and revenue outlook to well below Wall Street expectations. The news saw the company's shares tumble 7%.

RIM has blamed slower subscriber growth and weaker margins.

Its Q3 revenue is now expected to be $2.75-$2.78 billion which is 9% below the average of analysts' forecasts.

"Product launch timing, general economic conditions and foreign exchange volatility have tempered our results in the third quarter", co-chief executive Jim Balsillie said in a statement.

BBC dragon eyes up Woolworths. Biz, Woolworths, BBC, DVD, CDs 0

According to the Beeb, none other than Dragon's Den star Theo Paphitis may be about to say, "I'm in" and save the floundering retailer, Woolworths.

Deloitte, which was appointed Woolworths' administrator on 26 November, said there had been "substantial interest" in the firm, and Mr Paphitis is claimed to be amongst those bidding.

He is allegedly "working on a plan to rescue some of the chain's most profitable stores and preserve the Woolworths brand.", says the BBC.

Amongst the 10 bidders is also Ardeshir Naghshineh, Woolworths' largest shareholder, who is a property developer and owner of London's Centrepoint building.

However, says the BBC in its report, it is unlikely that any one buyer will take control of the entire business, nor is it likely that a deal will be made any time soon.

Paphitis made his money by reviving the fortunes of several companies, including stationers Ryman and Partners and the La Senza lingerie chain.

Woolworths has 30,000 staff, 815 stores and four distribution centres, and also owns Entertainment UK, which distributes DVDs to supermarket groups and retailers including Zavvi. The latter has today suspended its online sales of DVDs, games and CDs because of Woolworths' position.

However, Entertainment UK may be rescued by a BBC buy-out, as the corporation already owns a share in this business.

Zavvi forced to stop selling DVDs, games and CDs online

Online and high street retailer Zavvi has been forced to stop selling DVDs, games and CDs through its website pretty much bringing its online sales to a halt.

It turns out that the main supplier of the retailer's stock is Entertainment UK - a unit of Woolworths, which went into administration on 26 November.

Zavvi is now looking for replacement suppliers but has had to suspend sales and even cancel some existing orders.

Customers who are affected will be sent an email.

Zavvi has released a statement in which it says: "Zavvi.co.uk would like to apologise for any inconvenience and would like to assure customers that this decision was not taken lightly".

"Customers can be confident that Zavvi is doing everything possible to resolve the situation as quickly as possible".

Microsoft Windows losing market share to Apple

A few percentage points may not seem like a big deal, but analysts are still pouncing on the fact that Microsoft Window's share of the operating system market has fallen below 90%.

This is the first time this has ever happened and took place in November, according to Net Applications.

Windows accounted for 89.6% of computers accessing the web last month said the research firm, which monitored 40,000 websites to establish market share and trends.

The November figure was a 0.84% drop from October and was significant because it was the largest Windows market share decline since 2006.

And it's Apple that's benefiting who had won 8.9% of the market by the end of November.

Tucows joins Global Fraud Fighting Community

Ethoca - an organisation set up to make eCommerce safer for companies and web surfers alike - has signed up the world's third largest domain name and email provider.

Tucows has joined Ethoca's Global Fraud Fighting Community.

Explains Ethoca: "The biggest problem for domain providers is that most of the fraud they deal with comes from stolen credit cards used by fraudsters whose aim is to create new domains to launch phishing and spam attacks".

"Stopping the fraudster means eliminating the abuse that occurs before the account is abandoned or shut down due to criminal activity. This means reduced charge backs, tied up domain names, bandwidth usage and effects of spam and phishing".

Ethoca hopes that its community members will be able to work together to securely share order experiences.

“Tucows modern fraud management means keeping fraudsters at bay, but it also means ensuring a positive experience for our customers”, said Ross Rader, Director of Retail Services, Tucows.

“By working with the Global Fraud Fighting Community we reduce the need for manual fraud reviews and avoid delays for customers. This improves the experience and transparency for all parties involved in a transaction with us, from customers to partners to credit card companies”.

Orange launches online film club

Film fans who want to talk about their favourite flicks or watch the latest trailers can now do it through Bebo and Facebook.

Orange has launched a new online film club on the two social networking websites.

Users just have to sign up to become "friends" of the club, and they will then get access to free preview screenings of the latest movies.

They will also get access to the 'Orange Wednesdays Movie Show' - a weekly online programme featuring movie news and previews.

Facebookers will get a new application, which will show when one of your friends is using the Orange two-for-one cinema ticket promotion.

You can then send an invite to a friend with the name of the film, where you're going to see it and what time to get a group together. And if you're not an Orange customer and one of your friends is, you can always "poke" them to get them to take you along to the movie.

Drivers more distracted by phones than passengers

They may be annoying but a back seat driver is apparently far less of a distraction than a phone call - hands free or not.

According to research carried out by the University of Utah, and published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, phone calls cause drivers to miss exits and follow other cars too closely.

While phones distract, passengers can act as a second set of eyes on the road so giving the driver warnings and also pointing out directions.

Said Dave Strayer of the University of Utah ot Reuters: "...chatting on a mobile phone can slow the reaction times of young adult drivers to levels seen among senior citizens, and shown that drivers using mobile telephones are as impaired as drivers who are legally drunk".

And the test results from the driving simulator used by the team also were quite damning of hands-free kits.

Drivers using a hands-free device drifted out of their lanes and missed exits more frequently than drivers talking to a passenger.

"The difference between a cell phone conversation and passenger conversation is due to the fact that the passenger is in the vehicle and knows what the traffic conditions are like, and they help the driver by reminding them of where to take an exit and pointing out hazards", Strayer concluded.

Despite the fact that we all spend far too much time on them, markeeters in the UK say that social networks have a limited reach for them.

According to a new survey by Epsilon, more than half of chief marketing officers (so the people trying to get their brand message out to Joe Public) say they are not interested in incorporating social networking sites into their marketing strategies.

55% said that they were not too interested or not interested at all.

And it seems they're going to cut down on email campaigns too - so less rubbish in our inboxes.

Nick Christie, UK country director of Epsilon International, claims that retailers see the equivalent of 14p revenue from each email delivered, which isn't very much.

Virgin signs deal with Yahoo for mobile search

Virgin Media is revamping its mobile portal and it will launch next Monday (8 December).

The portal will provide news, music, video, games and entertainment, but Virgin Media has also done a deal so that its phone customers will also be able to access Yahoo's mobile search offering, Yahoo oneSearch.

This search engine is designed specifically for browsing on the go as it returns results directly in the first screen.

This means that phone owners don't have to navigate through thousands of links to find the information they want, saving time.

Yahoo is now claiming that it has an 80% market share of the UK mobile search audience following on from similar exclusive deals with Orange, O2, 3 and T-Mobile.

Worldwide, it is working with more than 70 telecoms companies with more than 850 million mobile subscribers.

Microsoft gives the NSPCC a helping hand

Sales of some Microsoft software is set to give the NSPCC's Child's Voice Appeal an extra fund-raising push.

From today until the New Year, 15% of Microsoft Windows Vista or Office 2007 sales purchased through the Microsoft Store will be automatically donated to the NSPCC appeal.

The money is hoped to increase the number of calls that can be answered by ChildLine and the NSPCC Helpline.

Tim Hunter, Deputy Director of Fundraising at the NSPCC, said: “When a vulnerable child is in distress, the call an adult makes to the NSPCC Helpline could be a significant point in the child’s life".

"Tragically – we can not deal with every call just because of lack of funds. Even more unfortunately, a child may gain the courage to call ChildLine, only to not be able to get through".

"The money from this Christmas initiative will go towards our Child’s Voice Appeal which aims to let no child’s voice go unheard and to allow us to respond fully to every cry for help”.

Microsoft has been working with the NSPCC for 14 years now.

Nikon achieves number one DSLR spot

Nikon had a four year plan to grow its share in the DSLR market, and at the launch of the much anticipated D3X flagship DSLR, Nikon's professional business manager, Chris Hoare, said that the company has achieved its ambitions.

Nikon, he says, has grown its DSLR business by 333% since 2004. And, in October this year, it reached a key milestone in becoming number one in the DSLR market by volume of units in UK, Europe, the US and Japan.

Hoare added his recognition that Nikon's rivals will, obviously, also be bringing out new technologies, but focused on the company's current achievement.

In the pro market, specifically DSLR models over £750, Nikon has an average market share in the UK of 63%.

And this area now has a new flagship in the D3X, which offers a 24.5 megapixel CMOS sensor, noise control from ISO 100 to 1600, 5fps continuous shooting, in a sturdy magnesium alloy D3 body.

But what it is missing is HD video recording capabilities.

James Banfield of Nikon UK's pro support and training team explained that this simply wasn't in this camera's remit. The focus for this model always was delivering detail, he explained.

As Hoare added: "We've achieved a massive step in covering nearly all of the pro photography needs with this model. But we didn't have the HD video technology when we decided to bring this product to market".

But both hinted that the technology is now there, and so we should expect a new launch from Nikon in the future that may not pack in the pixels like the D3X but does offer HD video recording.

HP reveals strong Q4 results

HP actually previewed its Q4 results a week before revealing the actual figures, which was a sure sign that it's fairly chuffed with its financial situation.

Following the weeks of doom and gloom from other manufacturers, HP reported its revenue for Q4 was $33.6 billion, up 19% year on year.

Says Ars Technica, some of this can be attributed to Electronics Data Systems (EDS), which HP bought earlier this year.

Without taking EDS into account, HP's growth rate was 5% year on year.

The company's gross operating margin did fall, however, but only by 1.1%, and net earnings were down $0.1billion from the previous year.

Mark Hurd of HP commented on the results: "HP capped off a strong year by delivering another solid quarter led by strength in our services segment and disciplined expense management. Our global reach, broad portfolio, numerous cost initiatives and consistent execution differentiate HP in the current economic environment".

And he seems to be right - the company grew its revenue in all of the geographic areas it operates in during Q4: revenue in the Americas was up 17%, 22% in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (MEA), and 14% in Asia/Pacific.

Sales of notebooks have been particularly strong (up 21% revenue wise from 2007) although desktop computer revenue is down slightly by 2%.

But next year isn't looking so rosy - the company expects "an unfavourable year-over-year currency impact on revenue of approximately 5% in the first quarter and roughly 6-7% for the full fiscal year".

VIDEO: The Tech Week In View

Last week was a week of contrasts. You had sales (Black Friday) versus the launch of a Motorola phone with a whopping £1400 price tag.

Then there were discussions over the future of broadband worldwide, as ISPs hold their hands up and say, "We can't afford to foot the bill".

And last up - there was the Chancellor's decision to bring down VAT.

Nikon unveils the D3X DSLR

So the rumours have been circling the web since April, but now it's been confirmed - Nikon has a new flagship model.

The D3X is going to be available by the end of this month for a £5499.99 (7728.00 euros) price tag.

For this, you get a model that has an image sensor, which is more than twice the resolution of the D3.

This 24.5 megapixel CMOS sensor (rumours were 24.4 megapixels so mighty close) means that the D3X is an all-rounder "suitable for the broadest range of shooting situations, both in the studio and on location", says Nikon.

As well as the FX-format CMOS image sensor with 12-channel readout, gapless micro lens array and on-chip noise reduction, the camera delivers an ISO range of 100-1600, extendible down to ISO 50 and up to 6400 equivalent.

Photographers can shoot up to 5 fps continuous shooting at full resolution, or 7 fps in the 10MP DX-crop mode.

The camera inherits a MultiCAM3500FX 51-point autofocus system as well as Nikon's LiveView function for "situations where the use of the viewfinder is impractical".

Also worth a mention are the 12 milliseconds start-up time and the 40ms shutter lag.

Adds Nikon: "The Kevlar/carbon fibre composite shutter has been designed for intensive professional needs and tested to 300,000 cycles".

Design-wise, Nikon says this model offers the same ergonomics and handling as the D3, including a viewfinder which delivers 100% coverage and a three inch, 920,000-dot VGA TFT monitor enabling outstanding playback quality for on-the-spot image assessment.

“This is the camera that many professional photographers have been waiting for”, says Robert Cristina, professional products and NPS manager at Nikon Europe.

“Just as the D3 has become the professionals’ camera of choice in sports photography, the D3X’s extremely high imaging resolution will raise the bar for commercial, fashion and stock photography. The results speak for themselves: this is without doubt our highest-quality camera to date”.

Bold claims indeed.

We'll be at the UK launch today so make sure you check back for our video quick review and some hands-on snaps.
