Apple announces film and photography events

The Apple Store in Regent Street, London has announced a whole host of film and photography events at its store throughout April that are free for the public to attend.

Firstly on 7 April, Apple will be hosting an evening of BOOM! events. BOOM! is a new film-making and volunteering project that challenges young people to make films about their passions and concerns and use them to make a difference within their community.

Rhys Williams, one of the film-makers who entered a recent BOOM! competition challenging entrants to create a music video for Jack Savoretti's song Soldier's Eyes, will be playing his film at the event. Savoretti himself will also be there singing the song live and talking about the competition.

Following the screening and performance, the first BOOM! Awards will also take place, honouring the work of the volunteers and film-makers involved in the project.

Next up on 23 April you'll be able to see the latest in short films and music videos at a Future Shorts screening, which will include Q&As with top directors and other "special surprises".

Rounding off the month on 30 April, visitors to the Apple Store will be able to learn more about the award-winning hf2 headset exclusive to Apple, that combines noise-isolation technology, industry-leading fidelity and an in-line microphone for voice calls.

Plamodel DIY 35mm camera launched

This DIY camera is the perfect little challenge for any photographer who's ever carefully taken their camera apart to see how it works.

Sure, it's nothing fancy, but the 35mm camera kit will bring back memories of your childhood, snapping together the die-cut pieces in a similar way to how you would've put together your first model car, or those toys you used to get in Kinder Eggs.

There are around 30 different pieces to the Plamodel kit, and at the end of it you are left with a fully-functioning camera that you made with your own two hands. And we reckon that's pretty cool.

The kit is available now for $17.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 dated

Activision has finally announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be hitting our shelves on 10 November, handily in time for Christmas.

The follow-up to 2007's blockbuster Call of Duty 4, cited as the best-selling FPS game of all time, has been highly-anticipated by critics and gamers alike. However, rather disappointingly we have few details of what to expect as yet.

"Everyone on the team is laser focused on making the most gripping
experience we’ve ever created", assured Infinity Ward’s CEO, Vince
Zampella.

"No detail is too small and every finishing touch imaginable is underway to make Modern Warfare 2 our best ever".

Head over to the Modern Warfare website to check out a short trailer with a few clues about what we can expect from the sequel.

WD introduces 2TB capacity to My Book family

WD has expanded its My Book family of external hard drives to include a 2TB capacity, the largest capacity single-drive system currently available.

Developed to address the demand for higher storage capacities due to the increase of HD video cameras, digital photography and music downloads, the 2TB family is made up of four different models.

These are My Book Studio Edition and My Book Mac Edition, both formatted for Mac computers, and MyBook Home Edition and My Book Essential Edition, formatted for PC users.

The My Book Studio Edition comes with high speed FireWire 400/800 and eSATA interfaces as well as the popular USB 2.0 interface and a 5-year warranty, while its My Book Mac Edition sidekick keeps it simple with just a USB 2.0 interface and 1-year warranty.

Similarly, the My Book Home Edition features high-speed eSATA and FireWire 400 interfaces as well as USB 2.0, while My Book Essential Edition is more basic with just the USB 2.0 for transferring content to store.

All the 2TB My Book family features the "SmartPower" feature that turns the device on and off with the computer, as well as a SmartShutdown mode too, that will prevent the drive from being powered down until all the data has been written.

The My Book Studio Edition, My Book Home Edition and My Book Essential Edition drives are available now, with the My Book Mac Edition following behind in April. Prices will range from £242.99 to £279.99 depending on drive model.

EU to cap roaming data charges

If you've ever been abroad and been stung by extortionate roaming costs, this bit of news may well brighten up your summer holiday this year.

The EU has announced that the cost for making calls, sending messages and browsing the web abroad will fall from July this year, and continue to fall further in 2010 and 2011 as well.

This is all thanks to a deal European MPs have brokered with network operators. Even better, the prices that have been agreed are to be the absolute maximum operators will be allowed to charge for the services, rather than the going rate.

The agreement will see the cost of sending a text message capped at 11 cents (10p) throughout Europe, and the cost of browsing the web being capped at 1 Euro (92p) per megabyte. The latter would fall to 50 cents (46p) by July 2011.

Calling home will now be easier on your pocket too, with operators being able to charge no more than 40p per minute for outgoing calls.

There'll be no more rounding up of call durations to the nearest minute either. The agreement would see operators having to charge per second, although they would be able to charge for a minimum period of 30 seconds.

To help you out, operators will also have to offer the ability for customers to put a spending cap on their bill before travelling, and then be warned when they hit 80% of their limit. Very handy for avoiding unexpected enormous bills.

Of course not everyone is happy with this. The GSM Association has said it is "disappointed" with the deal, which apparently is being pushed earlier and further than originally suggested by the EC.

It's not set in stone yet. The agreement has to go before the European Parliament's industry committee at the end of the month and will the be voted on in April to see if it is approved. We'll keep you updated.

Virgin Media planning 200Mb broadband

Virgin Media has said it has the capabilities to offer broadband speeds of up to 200Mbps as early as next year, overshadowing BT's rival fibre network set to complete in 2012.

"We have an opportunity with our network to provide significantly higher speeds", said Virgin Media's chief executive Neil Berkett.

Virgin currently already offers a top speed of 50Mbps, with BT's forthcoming fibre network pushing 40 to 60Mb.

While BT has said this faster fibre network will begin hitting UK homes next year, Mr Berkett has said its roll out of higher speeds would be a "function of timing".

"When we look at the market I don't see us getting the returns right now for 100 or 150Mbps", he said.

"As we work with application providers, and content providers... there will be a natural point where we upgrade from 10, 20 and 50Mbps to something more".

"If BT were to meet the time frame they have suggested - of finishing by 2012 - I would see us as having much, much faster upstream speed, running at a minimum of 100Mbps downstream and possibly more. You can see a real opportunity there".

Mr Berkett went on to say he wouldn't be surprised to see Virgin Media start the introduction of faster speeds in 2010, with a theoretical limit of 200Mbps downstream speeds.

Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II printer announced

Canon has announced the Pixma Pro9000 Mark II printer, the predecessor of the original Pro9000, that will produce professional-quality prints up to A3+.

The Pixma Pro9000 Mark II improves on the design of predecessor
to offer faster, higher-quality monochrome printing, a wider range of
supported media, and a new "Ambient Light Correction" feature.

Default printing speeds in monochrome are now nearly three times faster than before, and the 8-colour ChromaLife100 Single-Inks system allows for more accurate colour reproduction across a wide colour gamut.

As for media options, Canon’s own range of media includes gloss,
semi-gloss and matte photo papers, plus Fine Art media, but users can also use a variety of specialist third-party media up to 1.2mm thick.

Included with the Pixma Pro9000 Mark II is Canon’s Easy-PhotoPrint Pro – a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and Canon Digital Photo Professional that allows you to print directly from these programs, with the latter of the two allowing EOS photographers to print directly from RAW files.

The Pixma Pro9000 Mark II will be available from June priced at £499.00.

Canon launches Pixma Pro9500 Mark II printer

Canon has announced the Pixma Pro9500 Mark II, a 10-colour pigment inkjet printer capable of producing prints up to A3+ size.

The printer will allow you to print on gloss and matte media without the need to swap inks, and supports ICC profiles for many types of specialist media.

As well as Canon's own media, it also supports Baryta types, canvas, and numerous Fine Art media from leading brands such as Canson, Hahnemühle, Innova and Moab.

For additional flexibility you can create custom ICC profiles, using Canon’s Colour Management Tool Pro 2 software with selected X-Rite colour spectrophotometers.

As for print quality, the addition of 16 bits per channel print capability allows for smoother tonal graduations in both colour and black and white prints. Also, dedicated monochrome inks help prevent problems such as colour casting for a smoother range of greyscale tones.

A new addition to the Pixma Pro9500 Mark II is an Ambient Light Correction feature using Canon Kyuanos technology. This allows users to select the type of lighting under which their print will be displayed, and the final print automatically adjusted to ensure the end result looks the way the photographer wanted.

Finally, the Pixma Pro9500 Mark II comes bundled with the Canon Easy-PhotoPrint Pro plug-in, which allows for printing directly from Adobe Photoshop.

Canon EOS users can also use the plug-in to print RAW files directly from Canon Digital Photo Professional software.

"The Pixma Pro9500 Mark II is for photographers who are serious about exhibiting and selling their images", said Rainer Fuehres, head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe. "Even on high gloss media, results remain consistently stunning".

The Pixma Pro9500 Mark II will be available from June priced at £729.00.

Both sweat and water-resistant, and ski-rated to -10 degrees, the new collection has been built specifically for sports activities, and designed to be washed after use.

The range starts with the MX 80 Sport II and the MX 85 Sport II for £25 and £35 respectively. The former features the Sennheiser Basswind system for powerful base response, while the latter a "twist to fit" system for an extra secure fit.

Tokina AT-X 16.5-135 DX lens launched

THQ Photo Products has announced the Tokina AT-X 16.5-135 DX, a lens designed exclusively for DSLR cameras with APS-C sensors.

The new lens gives the photographers an ultra wide-range zoom lens that has the equivalent angle of view to a 25-200mm.

The zoom range actually begins at 16.5mm, making it a lens for capturing things like scenic views and travel photography

The AT-X 16.5-135 DX also boasts three aspherical elements in which one all glass precision-moulded element and two compound elements yield high contrast. Additionally, two Super-low Dispersion (SD) glass elements correct any chromatic aberration.

Finally, the new Tokina lens features a newly designed high-precision mechanical zoom cam system, which minimises play and eliminates any zoom creep that might occur.

The Tokina AT-X 16.5-135 DX will be available for Nikon bodies from June, and for Canon bodies from July. No prices have been confirmed as yet.

<![CDATA[Microsoft announces new features for Games for Windows - Live]]> http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/23151/Microsoft-news-Games-Windows-features http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/23151/Microsoft-news-Games-Windows-features Tue, 24 Mar 2009 15:20:54 +0000 But improvements are just the "tipping point"
Microsoft announces new features for Games for Windows - Live

Microsoft has used the Game Developers Conference to announce a number of new features coming to its Games for Windows - Live online gaming service and community in the coming months.

First up, the company will be introducing more protection against piracy with server-side authentication to help prevent games getting leaked before their release date, while the new Marketplace APIs will let developers create online in-game store fronts and experiences surrounding the sale of additional content.

Finally, PC gamers will now also be able to save their personal settings for their Games for Windows - Live account in the cloud, meaning they can get access to their settings on any compatible and connected PC.

"This update and other features currently in development represent a
tipping point in the evolution of Games for Windows – Live as a
leading online PC gaming network", said Ron Pessner, general manager of Games for Windows – Live.

"In the coming months, we will continue to deliver on our promise to provide gamers and publishers with the industry's best connected gaming experiences through the Live service".

The Games for Windows - Live community has seen a boost in users since the launch of its more PC-friendly interface back in November and the scrapping of the membership fee in July, no doubt helped along by some big names such as GTA IV and Fallout 3 as well.

We'll bring you more on this, and any other news from GDC when we get it.
