Obviously making space for other things, Sony is offering a new bundle with a console in a new colour.

On offer in North America for $149.99 is a SingStar bundle which comes with the game, two microphones and a Ceramic White PS2 and controller.

The bundle is set to ship in November bringing fans 30 songs and six medleys from artists such as U2 and Gorillaz, and it challenges players to sing along with pitch and timing indicators on the screen to score points.

"With our expansive library of titles for PlayStation, led by social gaming experiences such as SingStar, and Buzz!, we have an incredible offering for first-time gaming families", commented Jack Tretton, SCEA's president and CEO, in a news release.

"At $149, the limited edition Ceramic White PlayStation 2, bundled with the family-friendly social gaming title, SingStar Pop, is an unbeatable value that will provide fun for everyone this holiday."

So, it’s M for Manhunt 2 . Gaming, PS2, Rockstar, Sony, Nintendo, Nintendo Wii 0

After much hoo-ha, toing and froing, and general moral outrage, Manhunt 2 has been given an M for mature rating in the States.

The ESRB gave the title the rating after what must have been the most scandalised pre-release run up of any game, and it only came after Rockstar put forward a modified version. The original was given an AO, Adults Only rating.

The game is due out in North America on October 31 much to the relief of the developers, as both Sony and Nintendo had said an AO rated game wouldn’t be allowed anywhere near their consoles.

"Manhunt 2 is important to us, and we're glad it can finally be appreciated as a gaming experience", said Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar.

"We love the horror genre. Manhunt 2 is a powerful piece of interactive story telling that is a unique video game experience. We think horror fans will love it."

The old High Street favourite Woolworths has decided to brighten up the wet British summer by offering the PS3 for £375 over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The price represents the lowest level that Sony’s console has seen as yet and the value doesn’t stop there as it is being offered in a bundle with two games, two Blu-Ray discs and an extra controller.

"We expect it to be a massive weekend for games and console sales", said Woolworths games buyer Alastair Burks.

"Competition is intense in the games market and all the big retailers are cutting prices and offering deals to try and stay ahead of the game. We believe our PlayStation 3 deal is the best in the market and expect it to be phenomenally popular."

"This summer’s indifferent weather has meant shoppers turning to indoor pursuits instead of going to the beach or a barbecue. As a result games sales at Woolworths have hit record levels for this time of year."

The RRP for Sony's next-gen console is £425, so it's objectively fair to say that this deal - especially with the extras bundled - is a bit of a bargain.

Looks like there's some other gaming deals to be had to, so if you're in the market for some new gaming items to keep you amused over the bank holiday then have a butcher's...

Microsoft has announced that it is taking a second look at the official Wireless Racing Wheel following reports that it can overheat and start to smoke.

The decision to retrofit has been taken as a component in the chassis of the wheel overheats when the AC/DC power adaptor is used. It is however, still safe to use with batteries.

However, the company were quick to say that it was preventative action as there had been no serious incidents as yet.

"There have been no reported incidences of fire, personal injury or property damage resulting from the component failure in the wheel", Microsoft said in a statement.

US Gamers who own a Wheel should stop using the AC/DC adaptor and contact Microsoft. As for Europe, there hasn’t been any word as yet but we'll keep you posted.

Well, Messiah Entertainment has stepped up to announce the Darklite product line.

Firstly, there's the Darklite DVD Remote, which is an ion-lithium powered DVD/Blu-Ray media remote for the PS3 featuring bright backlit buttons for visibility in the dark.

The ultra-thin, high-gloss black unit opens and closes much like a sliding mobile phone and includes a charging station, and is on sale for $29.99 come September 25th.

The other Darklite product is the Integrated Lightbar, a vivid lighting product for the PS3 that creates a unique atmosphere in the room while playing games or watching movies.

Sony talks of PSP hard drive possibility. Gaming, PSP, PS3, PS2, Gaming hardware, Sony 0

The Games Con in Leipzig is throwing up ideas all over the shop and none more intriguing than the possibility of a hard drive for the PSP.

Sony Europe boss David Reeves spoke of the concept with Gamesindustry.biz saying, "I think that it certainly is not ruled out".

"The only thing I would say is that the flash memory is simply so cheap - you can get an 8GB Memory Stick for under 100 Euros, and on 8GB you can get a lot of content."

"I think the big debate is - there's a point in time when you have to put a stake in the ground and say we're going to go with flash memory or we're going to go with hard drive. I don't think they've put that stake in the ground just yet", he added.

"So they're thinking about it - I think they'll get through Christmas and think about what the next step would be. You might hear more later."

Well, that all sounds very up in the air to us, but you never know, so keep checking back for details.

It was only a matter of time before someone would try to emulate the success of the Wii on other consoles and it looks like In2Games has stepped up.

The company intends to release six titles in time for Christmas including Realplay Tennis, Realplay Pool, Realplay Golf, Realplay Racing, Realplay Bowling and Realplay Puzzlesphere, all of which will go for £29.99.

To complement the games, In2Games are going to unveil motion-sensing peripherals for the PS2 games at the Leipzig Gaming Convention.

"The Realplay range of games is aimed squarely at those PS2 owners who want to play wireless motion-sensing games without needing to splash out on a new console", commented Elliott Myers, CEO of In2Games.

"Each peripheral is as accurate as any video gaming technology out there at the moment, but on an entirely new format."

"The games are fun, challenging and highly addictive, and the wireless peripherals offer the best way of controlling games on what will be this Christmas’ most popular mainstream console."

The news comes after rumours on a blogger's site we reported on earlier where speculation also suggested that the addition would be made to the core model but this is not the case.

In a statement to the press, Microsoft said, "We are offering an HDMI port for Xbox 360 simply as another choice in Xbox 360 owners' games and entertainment experience".

"Retailers are gradually introducing HDMI-enabled Xbox 360s into the channel to meet demand."

Well, it’s the first that anyone around here has heard of it and Microsoft has yet to comment to the further reports that it will be a "soft launch", which is to say the introduction will be done without much publicity.

The report on the blog ties in the HDMI port addition with the new 65nm CPU chips as standard in the consoles … watch this space!

Handheld Wii to launch? Patent for motion-sensing Nintendo portable. Gaming, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 0

Obviously impressed with the success of the motion sensing Wii remotes, it seems like Nintendo may be looking into doing something similar for a handheld.

A patent application, filed in the U.S back in March, has been found detailing the concept and reading, "The housing [console] incorporates an XY-axis acceleration sensor to detect an acceleration in an X-axis and Y-axis direction and a Z-axis contact switch to detect an acceleration in a Z-axis direction."

Well, it sounds like a Wii remote but the image, albeit rather crude, shows a Game Boy type handheld. And it wouldn’t be the first time that Nintendo have tried something similar with a handheld as it has previously released the likes of Kirby Tilt ‘n’ Tumble on Game Boy Color and WarioWare Twisted on GBA.

Musika can be found on iTunes Store and has simple enough game play to accommodate the platform, using just one button and the users music collection on the iPod.

"The iPod is a device that revolutionised music and it is now poised to be a progressive gaming platform," commented Matsuura.

World of Warcraft expansion discovered. Gaming, PC games, Online, MMORPG, Blizzard 0

Details of a World of Warcraft expansion pack, titled Wrath of the Lich King, have been found on the online database of the US Patent and Trademark Office.

The title has formerly been seen on the database of the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK), the German software ratings board, fuelling many rumours of a Leipzip Games Con announcement. The listing then mysteriously disappeared only to then surface in the States.

The fact that the filing was found in the trademark database with a 1B filing basis has led many to believe that the expansion is as good as on its way. The 1B filing means that there is an "intent-to-use". The Patent Office’s regulations states that "An intent-to-use application must include a sworn statement that applicants have a bona fide intention to use the mark in commerce".

So, when will the official announcement be made? Most bets are on a BlizzCon 2007 conference, a move that itself has a pedigree. In 2005 Blizzard used BlizzCon to announce Burning Crusade.

BlizzCon 2007 starts tomorrow in Anaheim, California.

Take-Two has confirmed to our sister site Gamesdog.co.uk that Grand Theft Auto IV has been delayed so that its October 2007 release has been pushed back to sometime in 2008.

It was announced that the title will be out in the second quarter of the 2008 financial year, which means from February 1, and is due to Take Two revising its fiscal books.

The company also stated that the "delay was essential to ensure the quality of GTA IV".

"Obviously, we are very disappointed to reduce guidance after having previously reaffirmed it", said Take-Two's CEO Ben Feder.

"Other than a matter of timing, the movement of Grand Theft Auto IV does not compromise Take-Two in any way. We are in sound financial condition and have a great product line-up. Grand Theft Auto IV is going to be the defining next generation videogame action adventure."

Take Two has revised its fiscal year guidance, now anticipating around $950 million to $1 billion, with a net loss per share in the range of $1.25 to $1.35. That’s over $200 million less than previous estimates of $1.2 billion to $1.25 billion in annual revenue.

Budding armchair managers should reach for their sheep skin coats and foul language in time for this winter season as Football Manager 2008 steps off the sidelines.

SEGA Europe promises to get the game out to fans before Christmas on the PC and Mac, and deliver a fully updated game for the new season which will allow players to select their favourite club or international team and guide them to glorious success by putting them through Cup matches, Leagues, European Championships and even major international tournaments.

There’ll be over 5000 playable teams from over 50 countries and the Fan Feedback feature on the last Football Manager means that Sega has known what the fans want and there'll be over a hundred new features.

The new features include a brand new advisory system to help new players through the different aspects of the game, making Football Manager 2008 the most accessible game in the series yet, without losing any depth for the more experienced player.

Sega are also very proud of Match Flow, the largest change to match-day in a Sports Interactive game since the introduction of the 2D match engine. Match flow brings more atmosphere to match-days with match previews, team talks, opposition player instructions, the match itself, half time and post match. These now seamlessly follow on from one another, with no more pausing to make tactical changes, and a mini-radar pitch whilst making those tactical changes to keep you in touch with what’s going on in the match.

In addition there have been changes to International Management, the Transfer Centre, Finances, and the in-game media coverage has been expanded.

Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing (CSM), a Microsoft contractor that makes CPUs for the Xbox 360, has let on that it’s set to develop a 45-nanometer chip.

The design, which is scheduled for release late 2008 or early 2009, should help Microsoft reduce manufacturing costs and produce less heat in the console than the 90nm and 65nm versions which CSM has supplied.

Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has, however, been rather coy in naming names. "We have customers' activity for products in the CPU space that goes into a video game device", said CEO Chia Song Hwee.

"As 65nm just started production in the last two quarters, you would expect 45nm to come on stream about 18 months from that time frame."

Following the BBFC’s ban of Manhunt 2 back on June 19, Rockstar has filed an appeal asking the Video Appeals Committee to overturn the decision.

A Rockstar spokesperson, speaking to industry games website GamesIndustry.bi, said, "Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. confirmed today that Rockstar Games has appealed the BBFC decision that prohibited the release of any version of Manhunt 2 in Britain".

According to reports, the appeals was made yesterday, just in time for the 6 week deadline that companies have to question decisions.

"Where possible we try to consider cuts or, in the case of games, modifications which remove the material which contravenes the Board’s published Guidelines. In the case of Manhunt 2 this has not been possible", commented BBFC director David Cooke just after the ban was imposed.

We can only wait and see just how willing Rockstar is to make changes, and just how willing the Video Appeals Committee is to listen as the developer presents its version of events.

As we'd already reported here on Pocket-lint.co.uk, it appears that Sony’s next-gen console will be getting a digital TV tuner sometime early in 2008.

The digital tuner will offer gamers programmable TV recording functions. This is according to details from a Kiwi website "The Press" reporting comments from Warwick Light, sales and marketing manager for Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand.

Light commented as to the new functions saying they would, "transform the PS3 capabilities so as to meet people's changing entertainment needs".

"We're also hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service (in New Zealand) – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder."

It was previously suggested that this announcement would be formally made at the Leipzig games conference, so the timescale Light refers to maybe just for New Zealand.

The images show ads from US retailers Wal-Mart and Toys R Us and show the rumoured cut to $349.

Much has gone to give weight to the rumours of a drop in price at this stage in the life of the 360 - namely the smaller, cheaper chipset that Microsoft has developed, and the fact that most consoles are lowered in price at this point after launch.

Regardless of everything, all parties involved, from Microsoft to the retailers, have refused to comment, and European gamers wonder if any cuts will make it over this side of the pond.

Sony faces lawsuit over cell processor patent . Gaming, PS3, Sony, Parallel Processing, Lawsuits 0

Parallel Processing, a California based company, is taking Sony to court over the cell chip in the PS3.

The petition, filed in Eastern District of Texas, is seeking not only damages but the destruction of Sony products which involve the patent.

The complaint all comes down to an alleged infringement of a patent for "synchronised parallel processing with shared memory".

The patent is attributed to International Parallel Machines of New Bedford, Massachusetts, while Parallel Processing Corporation is the self described "exclusive licensee".

Of course Parallel are claiming "causing irreparable harm and monetary damage".

The team behind the Lego Star Wars games have moved on to its next Lucas Arts franchise; Indiana Jones.

Announced at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, the next project for old time partners Traveller’s Tales and LucusArts has been confirmed as a Lego video game version of Indiana Jones.

The title will be out sometime next year “on the consoles”, which we are taking to be the three next-gen at the very least, and hopefully the handhelds too.

The game will apparently parody the three Indiana Jones films, of the Lost Ark, the Temple of Doom, and the Last Crusade, and will be developed by the team that brought us the Lego Star Wars titles.

Wii found in more affluent households, says Nielsen . Gaming, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, Nintendo, Nielsen 0

Gamers who like to keep up with the Jones might be interested in learning that the Nintendo Wii is the console to head for, at least according to research by Nielsen as it launched GamePlay Metrics, a games industry data-tracking service.

Though better known for tracking TV rating, Nielsen has moved into games and with the move has hit the industry with a few interesting facts that are sure to have an impact in areas like advertising.

GamePlay Metrics takes data from over 12,000 households (about 33,000 people) to monitor gaming console and PC game use.

The company says GamePlay Metrics demonstrates, "Who is playing games, on which systems, at what times, and, when integrated with other Nielsen data, illustrates which other media platforms are also engaging gamers and which consumer goods they're likely to buy".

So, back to the Wii news. It seems that though it is the cheapest of the next-gen consoles, it is in fact more likely to be found in households where the annual income is over $100,000.

Following sales figures, the report also shows that PS2 is still leading the way as the platform had the heaviest usage of all consoles as recently as this past June with 42.3% of all console playtime.

The Xbox followed with 17%, the 360 with 8%, Gamecube with 5.8%, Wii with 4% and PS3 at the back with just 3%.

The information gleaned from the PCs bring little surprise as it shows that World of Warcraft was the most-played PC game in June. Players having been playing an average of 17 hours a week, the title accounted for 18% of all PC gaming time.

"This is the first glimpse of metered in-home video game player data, providing game publishers, console manufactures, advertisers and competing entertainment media with the most accurate, objective, and quantifiable metric available", said Nielsen Games and Nielsen Wireless vice president Jeff Herrmann in a statement.

"We believe this will change the discussions surrounding which games get developed for what consoles and how publishers represent their actual audience to advertisers."

As far as tie-ins go, a comic of the hugely popular World of Warcraft wasn’t a big leap of imagination. So, it should be little surprise that DC Comics has announced that it has something in the works.

The comic will be out in monthly instalments with the first out this Autumn and written by Walter Simonson with feature art by Ludo Lullabi and inker Sandra Hope. Jim Lee and Blizzard's Senior Art Director Samwise Didier will work on covers for the first six issues.

For fans wanting to get an early look at what will be on offer, preview art from the series will debut at Comic-Con International, held in San Diego, CA from July 26-29, however we can bring you an idea of the story…

The first storyline begins when a human is found unconscious on the shores of Kalimdor, with no memory of who he is or how he arrived there. Enslaved by an orc shaman, the man must fight for survival against members of both the Alliance and the Horde.
