Open-source operating system creator Canonical has announced that Ubuntu 10.04, codenamed Lucid Lynx, has been let out into the wild, and is available for download.
The announcement follows 2009's release of Jaunty Jackalope and Karmic Koala, and signifies the end of six months of development by a team across the world. Lucid Lynx includes a number of upgrades over its predecessors, including a visual refresh (getting rid of the brown that has characterised Ubuntu for some time), and a focus on reliability and stability.
It's an LTS release, which stands for "Long-term support" and means that it'll receive updates for three years, as opposed to the 18 months enjoyed by a regular Ubuntu release. That means that it's a little more suitable for businesses who don't want to be upgrading every six months to a new version.
The other big feature of this update is deep social networking support. It comes as standard with Gwibber, a microblogging tool, and also includes improved messaging notifications. A simple video editing tool called PiTiVi is included, too, and a music store has been integrated into Rhythmbox.
Ubuntu 10.04 is a free download, and is available now from the Ubuntu website.
